Here is an email that I received from someone who had recently read my book “The A, B, C’s Of Success.” He was struggling with how to achieve successful status of ROCK STAR. He certainly had the passion and the desire and I appreciated him reaching out for the re-assurance he apparently was looking for.
“Hello Sir
I am Ashvin living in New Delhi India. I am currently working as a manager in a company which comes exclusively under the telecom sector. It has been 4 years since my student days I have been into music and started it as a part time hobby but later it began my obsession and became my serious hobby and ultimately i wanted to convert it into my full time profession and after reading your book I would like to correct my lines by saying I will make it a full time proffession………He went on to tell me some more about himself and his desire to “Liberate” people with his music and the struggles he was facing along the way with bands breaking up and other difficulties………..I hope this mail reaches to you and you are able to read this mail and give some of your inputs out of your precious time. Eagerly waiting for your response
Thanking You
Regard
Ashvin ”
I can tell you that there is no better feeling than knowing that you are making a difference in people’s lives. So I figured I would share my response with you in case you too are having struggles with something that you want to achieve in life.
Hi Ashvin!
Thanks for reaching out. I think one of the bravest things you can do in life is show vulnerability. You’re obviously passionate about your singing and guitar playing and I can certainly understand the frustrations of things not happening quickly. I struggled for years to make any money and get a successful business off the ground. But I also have a lot of passion for what I do, and that is something that you MUST never lose.
When something is your passion, you do it because it’s part of who you are. The problem typically comes in because we as humans want to turn that passion into money somehow, and when that doesn’t happen fast enough, we begin to doubt our skills. I’ve taken a ride on that “Emotional Rollercoaster” many times and it can be scary and exciting.
I always tell my kids, when you have a problem, don’t focus on the problem, focus on the solution. If you look and evaluate what you want to achieve, and break it down into smaller managable goals that don’t seem so overwhelming then you’ll begin to see what you need to do. For instance.
Your hope is to be someone who is liberating people with your music. But what you’ll need to do is really define what that hope is and turn it into a goal. What does liberating people with your music mean in terms of the vision you have for it? How many people do you want at your concerts? Do you need a full band? Is your style of music the right fit for what you want to accomplish?
Ask yourself some specific questions and answer them honestly for yourself. Break each element of the larger goal into small, measurable steps and keep track of those steps. Keeping track will keep you motivated because you’ll see progress. Most times people look at the goal and get overwhelmed thinking they’ll never be able to do it. But when you break it down into specific measurable tasks, you can begin to see things more clearly. If your goal was to eat an elephant, the whole task would seem overwhelming. But you could do it….one bite at a time. (It’s a metaphore, I don’t expect you to eat an elephant to practice your goal setting
)
)The other element is to understand that YOU define who you are. If you have any doubt that you are a successful guitarist who is liberating people with his music, you will struggle. The fact is YOU ARE someone who is liberating people with his music. You need to wake up each day and tell yourself something like “I am the greatest guitarist who has ever lived” or “When I sing and play guitar, people are overwhelmed by my talents” or some other affirmations that will keep your mind focused on your talents and abilities.
I’ll finish with this. Everything, always takes longer than we expect it to take. However, we can shorten that time by setting time limits for ourselves. For example, you can say, “I will have a band that is booked 2 times per week by July 1st” and then break that down into what it would take to make that happen. Our brains are funny little machines. Much like a computer, they are powerful, but without specific instructions of what we want it to do, it sits there awaiting a command. You must be the person who controls your brain and your life. I know that might sound weird, but many people sit and wait for something to happen. It doesn’t sound to me like you are that type of person. So continue to go forward. FIND A MENTOR! And remember Action, Belief, Consistency and Time are the only 4 factors that determine success. Yes, talent has something to do with it, but there are many people with far less talent than the best that go much farther in life because of their belief in themselves.
Quote for you:
“What is opportunity, and when does it knock? It never knocks. You can wait a whole lifetime, listening, hoping, and you will hear no knocking. None at all. You are opportunity, and you must knock on the door leading to your destiny. You prepare yourself to recognize opportunity, to pursue and seize opportunity as you develop the strength of your personality, and build a self-image with which you are able to live with your self-respect alive and growing.” - Maxwell Maltz
